Newsletter May 2009

Hi and thanks for taking five to read our newsletter. Our business is going from strength to strength as we launch new products and our data centre in Coventry is really starting to take off. This monthly email publication will help us to help you keep up to date with our latest developments. We are a specialist in web hosting, but we also have big ideas for the world of IT generally that I would like to tell you about. In this issue we focus on the new challenges facing the web - namely improving online payment security and addressing increasing spam and virus issues. We are working with online security specialists to make ourselves and our key clients PCI-DSS compliant. If you don't know what that means and you are running an online business that accepts credit cards, then you should read on.
Elsewhere in this issue we look at the ways of running PUSH email services on the new generation of mobile smartphones. Our new Microsoft Hosted Exchange platform brings synchronised email, contacts and calendar to the latest generation of mobiles and at a very competitive price.

I receive a lot of email that I don't read, and a lot of those messages are unsolicited and fill up my inbox with junk. Spam is a growing problem now, with up to 90% of messages being unsolicited and containing harmful information. To eliminate this problem, we are now offering Sophos PureMessage to our customers using email services who wish to be free from spam. To that end, and so that we practice what we preach, if you don't want to receive any more of our newsletters or promotional emails, then simply click on the link to unsubscribe yourself from this service.

As always, I hope that you are happy with the service you receive from Netplan and would welcome any comments from you about our products. It is only by talking to our customers that we can find out what they really want.
I wish you all the best for your business this Spring.

Stuart Gibson MD, Netplan

PCI-DSS New Online Security Standards

The world's five largest payment card organisations have come together to form an international standard for online payment security. The new PCI-DSS standard is aimed at all online businesses taking payments over the web. Now supported by Netplan, the new procedures detail the networking and security practices necessary for compliance. Whereas previous initiatives have failed due to multiple standards, this time the card companies have the backing of all major banks across the world.

At a time when online fraud is increasing, it seems that pressure to protect merchant accounts from fraud may force banks to ensure that their customers follow the new security standard. Netplan is currently taking leading clients though the compliance process - firewalls and servers have to be configured and audited to meet the new criteria. Whilst not currently compulsory, the new measures are so well supported internationally that PCI compliance will become the industry standard over the next 12 months. As the amount of online trade grows, so does the risk of attacks from pharming and phishing hackers. PCI-DSS invokes a new set of rigorous operating procedures and server architecture that prevents security breaches. In the future, card service providers will punish vulnerable online payment portals by refusing to clear funds through them which will result in merchant accounts being closed down.

The emphasis is now shifting onto the online vendor to ensure adequate system wide security through the implementation of PCI-DSS. A leader in the field, Netplan will assist in ensuring your network, firewalls and servers PCI-DSS compliant. As always there are early adopters at the head of the pack, but as these businesses become more robust and fend off attacks, so the criminals will be focusing on the more vulnerable websites left behind. PCI-DSS is here to stay and the only way to ensure your commercial viability online is to adopt it.

Online trade growth rises by 19% year on year.

Despite the economic gloom on the high street, online retail has weathered the storm to produce astonishing double digit growth in the year to March 2009. Although forecasts show that online growth is slowing, retailers have seen growth in like for like sales of up to 26%. Increased web use among the over 55's is seen as key driver in increasing sales. Industry analysts also point towards the increased uptake of broadband and improved internet security encouraging more people to take advantage of web based shops.

Office VOIP takes off as UK PLC cuts costs.

The Netplan Office VOIP system offers a wide range of enterprise grade features straight out of the box including in call menus, call forwarding, music on hold, call transfers and email notification of missed office calls to your mobile device. When used with a suitable mobile hand set, the system can even email audio files to your mobile handset, so you never need be out of touch with the office again.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is helping British businesses maximise the cost efficiencies from the growing availability of high speed broadband connections. The technology compresses voice communications and sends it over the internet as data. This allows for multiple telephones to be installed in offices with just one broadband connection, reducing line rental costs, offering greater flexibility and user configurable voicemail and menu options. Each broadband connection supports up to 30 concurrent calls whether made using a handset or a software telephone running on a PC. Users can then communicate internally for free and benefit from vastly reduced national and international call rates.

The handsets are available to existing customers on a 30-day trial basis, delivered to you, ready to go with a local call rate 0870 number pre-programmed. When moving your telephone system to this new cost saving technology, existing BT telephone numbers can be ported across to the system for a small charge, so migrating on to Netplan Office VOIP is a simple process with no down time.

Lee Jones from Netplan says: "Office VOIP is the future of business telecoms in Britain. Digital voice systems now offer value for money and ease of use to every size of business."

Simple to install and operate, the Netplan Office VOIP solution offers a fully expandable and professional solution for your business telephone system requirements. If you would like to receive a trial handset, please call 0870 751 8345 today.

With this software installed, your company will have the upper hand in the battle against the spammers. Without it, really you are vulnerable to attack! s. "20% of customers migrate away from slow loading websites" Google announces
Google has found that web users leave websites that fail to load immediately. Worryingly for online businesses, 20% of web users will leave a site that is slow to load. A delay of even half a second causes users to navigate away from websites.

High quality videos, flash intros and large images can all reduce page loading times. However, the largest factor that will alter the speed of your website is the server that it is hosted on. Upgrading your server from shared hosting to a virtual or dedicated managed server will boost speeds, pushing your website further up the Google ranking and driving more customers to your site. Virtual and dedicated servers are available now from just £600 per year.
